How Do ST79, ST108 and EN 285 Relate to Sterile Processing?

These standards address different parts of the sterile processing environment. They reinforce SSI’s technical relevance, but they should not be treated as one interchangeable compliance package. SSI uses proprietary steam-testing equipment designed around applicable AAMI requirements and ASTM D1066 steam-sampling practices, giving hospital teams a purpose-built approach to evaluating sterilizer steam conditions.

ANSI/AAMI ST79

ST79 addresses steam sterilization and sterility assurance in healthcare facilities.

Its relevance extends beyond the sterilizer to the practices, maintenance, testing, documentation, and utility conditions that support reliable sterilization.

SSI supports the steam-side portion of that environment by evaluating defined system conditions, documenting findings, and supporting corrective action and service contracts.

ANSI/AAMI ST108

ST108 addresses water used in medical-device processing.

ST108 is not a steam-quality standard. It becomes relevant to SSI when water quality or applicable utility-interface conditions are included within the defined scope. Steam-quality testing alone should not be represented as evidence of ST108 compliance.

EN 285

EN 285 establishes requirements and tests for large steam sterilizers.

Where the method, equipment, configuration, and contracted scope apply, EN 285 provides a technical basis for steam-quality testing associated with sterilizer steam supply.

SSI applies relevant standards and test methods within its contracted scope for adherence to code and standards. SSI does not certify a hospital or sterilizer as compliant with ST79, ST108, or EN 285. But it will establish protocols and train facilities to meet the standards.

Proven Experience in Active Hospital Environments

SSI conducted comprehensive steam trap survey, replacement work, and steam quality testing across several VA Medical Centers and public sector Hospitals. Scope included testing, tagging, documentation, replacement of failed traps, and associated piping, valves, and fittings. Work was completed in operating hospital environments and during scheduled shutdown windows.
